FRESH Ideas

What I'm reading this week:
The first ever issue of FRESH, a magazine presented by USA Today's Your Life.

FRESH's goal is to be a "companion to those who seek a life of good health, positive purpose, loving relationships, wonder, and joy- not only for themselves, but for those whom they nurture." What can be better than that right?!

Lets chat about some of FRESH's first articles...

Calorie Confusion:
I was shocked to read that a study in the January issue of the American Dietetic Association revealed that restaurant food averaged 18% more calories than stated, and frozen means had 8% more calories than stated. Here we think we are being health conscious by reading online nutrition facts for restaurants we visit and looking at the nutrition label for foods we buy in the grocery store and it turns out we are being dooped!

Let me put this in perspective... you go out to dinner at P.F. Chang's (one of the restaurants sited) and want to make a healthy choice so you order the Asian Grilled Salmon on brown rice. Based on their online nutrition facts you are under the impression that this dish is 345 calories and so you think- that's great, I think I'll finish my plate!

Shock #1: If you look at the fine print of the nutrition facts you will see that 345 calories is per serving and the Grilled Salmon dinner actually contains 2 servings, thus 690 calories! Shock #2: Based on this recent study the actual calorie count is 18% higher than reported which means you have now consumed a whopping 814 CALORIES. This is now 469 calories MORE than you thought you were eating... if you made this same mistake once a week it would equate to gaining SEVEN POUNDS a year!
